Justin and Hailey Bieber Discuss Their Faith and Marriage in Vogue Magazine Interview

Justin and Hailey Bieber Vogue

Newlyweds Justin and Hailey Bieber are featured on the cover of this month’s issue of Vogue Magazine and, in the cover story, the pair are unabashedly open about their faith.

In the article we find out that the Biebers waited until after they were married to have sex. The decision, Justin said, was a way to bring himself closer to God:

“I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result.”

Last fall, at the height of his popularity, Justin took a break from music. The industry may have been good to Bieber’s bank account, but it didn’t leave much room for introspection. In his time off, Bieber focused on personal growth and his relationship with his new wife.

Justin has been seeking Christian counsel in recent months, often turning to the Bible for marriage tips. He’s also been spending a lot of time with pastor and author, Judah Smith, and Hillsong New York Pastor, Carl Lentz. Attending church and participating in Christian Conferences is an important part of the Bieber’s life now. Which begs the question: is Justin Bieber ready to be a Christian role model?

It’s more nuanced, he explains:

“I wouldn’t consider myself religious. That confuses a lot of people because they’re like, Well, you go to church. I believe in the story of Jesus—that’s the simplicity of what I believe. But I don’t believe in all the religious elitism and pretentiousness, like people are better than you because they come to church, like you have to go to church and dress a certain way. I get sensitive when religion comes up because it’s been so hurtful to a lot of people. I don’t want to be thought of as someone who stands for any of the injustice that religion has done and does do.”

In an Instagram post, set against a picture of the happy couple, Justin declared, “I promise to lead our family with honor and integrity letting Jesus through his Holy Spirit guide us in everything we do and every decision we make.”

It’s clear that Justin and Hailey Bieber are sensitive to the public’s perception of their faith, and are doing their best to ensure that it’s received in a positive light. At a time when it seems like young people are moving further and further from the church, it’s encouraging to see the world’s biggest pop star embracing his faith on the big stage.
