Dr. Patricia Bath Not Only Broke Barriers, She Helped Prevent Blindness Around the World

The first African America to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent, Dr. Patricia Bath has broken ground for women and people of color in a number of areas. Many of us will thank her for the Laserphaco Probe, a medical device she invented in 1986 that improves on the use of lasers to remove cataracts. Bath didn’t stop there. Learn the importance of working hard and giving back from this unsung hero on this episode of Hugs From Heaven.

Instant Takeaways

  1. Keep your eyes focused on the prize. Dr. Bath faced hate, segregation, and racism in her life, but none of that stopped her from striving for excellence. In an interview with “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, she said, “I had a few obstacles, but I had to ‘shake it off’ just like Taylor Swift says.”
  2. Some biblical reinforcement. Proverbs 4:25 tells us, “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.”
